1801-1897 studied at Moscow Higher Technical College.
From 1893 active in revol student circles. 1897-1899 imprisoned for revol activities, then exiled to Vyatka Province. 1902 emigrated; 1903, after 2nd Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress, joined Bolsheviks.
Collaborated with Lenin’s “Iskra”. 1905, together with Lenin, M. South. Ol’minskiy and A. V. Lunacharskiy, edited newspapers “Vperyod” and “Proletariy”. 1905 and 1906 helped prepare and attented 3rd and 4th Party Congresses.
November 1905 returned to Russia. Party and lit work in Petersbuig and Odessa. Repeatedly arrested; in his publicistic and critical articles promoted Marxism.
From 1915 revol work abroad. 1917 member, Foreign Bureau, Central Committee, Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks). 1917-1919 Soviet plenipotentiary in Scandinavian countries.
1921-1923 Soviet plenipotentiary in Italy. 1922 attended Genoa and 1922-1923 Lausanne Conference.
