(It is whispered that there is a play that leaves only ins...)
It is whispered that there is a play that leaves only insanity and sorrow in its wake. It tempts those who read it, bringing upon them a vision of madness that should be left unseen... The stories herein traverse the elements of that play, and the words, themes and poetry, are permeated by the presence of the the King in Yellow, weaving together to leave upon the reader the ruinous impression of the Yellow Sign.

( The supernatural stories that make up Robert W. Chamber...)
The supernatural stories that make up Robert W. Chambers’s classic piece of weird fiction are tied together by a play that brings madness to all who read it: The King in Yellow. It’s a book that draws readers in with an irresistible yet innocent opening act, then drives them insane with the poisonous words of Act 2. It’s a book that cannot be suppressed, spreading like a disease from city to city, continent to continent. An influence on writers from H. P. Lovecraft to Neil Gaiman, The King in Yellow is one of the most important works of American supernatural fiction. In this dangerously unputdownable graphic-novel adaptation, I. N. J. Culbard brings to life a thrilling tale of horror that will make readers laugh and cry and tremble with fright . . . Read at your own risk.

(The first four stories are loosely connected by three mai...)
The first four stories are loosely connected by three main devices: A fictional play in book form entitled The King in Yellow A mysterious and malevolent supernatural entity known as The King in Yellow An eerie symbol called The Yellow Sign These stories are macabre in tone, centering, in keeping with the other tales, on characters that are often artists or decadents. The first and fourth stories, "The Repairer of Reputations" and "The Yellow Sign", are set in an imagined future 1920s America, whereas the second and third stories, "The Mask" and "In the Court of the Dragon", are set in Paris. These stories are haunted by the theme: "Have you found the Yellow Sign?" The weird and macabre character gradually fades away during the remaining stories, and the last three are written in the romantic fiction style common to Chambers' later work. They are all linked to the preceding stories by their Parisian setting and artistic protagonists.

(Robert William Chambers was an American artist and fictio...)
Robert William Chambers was an American artist and fiction writer best known for his book entitled The King in Yellow, a collection of short stories first published and copyrighted by F. Tennyson Neely in 1895. The book was reprinted in 1902 by Harpers and Brothers and copyrighted by the author. This second edition was illustrated, but omitted one of the original stories, “In the Court of the Dragon.” With one foot in the gothic horror genre and the other in early modern horror, The King in Yellow also touches on fantasy, mystery, war, mythology, and science fiction. The book had a profound influence on the work of Lovecraft and other similar writers of the early 20th Century. Unlike other authors of the past, Chambers was very successful in his lifetime, and The King in Yellow has seen brought back to the bestseller lists because of its tie with HBO’s TV show True Detective. Much has been written about The King in Yellow and readers interested can find several online articles, including Wikipedia, with links to yet more sources. This new printing is unique as it includes all the stories of the original 1895 book and all the illustrations of the illustrated 1902 edition.

(Excerpt from A King and a Few Dukes a Romance To George ...)
Excerpt from A King and a Few Dukes a Romance To George Goodridge Walker Old friend, I dream again; the skies are blue, The sounds of rippling rivers fill my ears, And borne upon the current of past years My thoughts are drifting back again to you. Again I lie beside the woodland stream Where golden grasses glisten splashed with spray, Where willows whiten in the breath of May, Where alder grey and slender birches gleam. I watch the crystal current flow and flow, Now silver, brimming in a placid pool, Now lost in hidden hazel thickets cool, Now on the sedge's edges lapping low. The painted trout come sailing, sailing by, Stemming the idle current of my dream, And sunbeams steal between green leaves and gleam On pebbled shallows, mirrors of the sky. So dream with me, old friend, beside the fire, Here where our shadows tremble on the wall, Where ashes rustle as the embers fall; And peace shall fall on us and end desire. R. W. C. Robert William Chambers (1865-1933) was an American artist and writer. He entered the Art Students League at around the age of twenty, studied at the École des Beaux- Arts, and at Académie Julian, in Paris. On his return to New York, he succeeded in selling his illustrations to Life, Truth, and Vogue magazines. Then, for reasons unclear, he devoted his time to writing, producing his first novel, In the Quarter in 1894. His most famous, and perhaps most meritorious effort is The King in Yellow (1895), a collection of weird fiction short stories, connected by the theme of a book (to which the title refers) which drives those who read it insane. According to some estimates, Chambers was one of the most successful literary careers of his period, his later novels selling well and a handful achieving bestseller status. Other works include: The Maid-At-Arms (1902), In Search of the Unknown (1904), The Fighting Chance (1906), The Firing Line (1908), The Danger Mark (1909), The Green Mouse (1910), Ailsa Paige (1910), The Common Law (1911), Between Friends (1914), The Hidden Children (1914) and In Secret (1919).

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. " He'll sober fast enough when it comes to pulling back again," said Sark; " now, Reggie, fling your tackle to the breeze, open your eyes, shut your mouth, and see what heaven will send you! " Heaven must have been listening for its cue; a heavy splash, another, and then a swirling flop and a slack line told a heartbreaking tale of lost opportunity. " Confound it! " muttered Lanark, "he jumped at the flies but I struck too slowly. I'm all in a tangle, Jack." He reeled in to disengage the line; Sark set the lantern beside him, then settled back comfortably to smoke and stare at the stars that seemed to grow brighter and yellower while he looked. ' Mr. Battyfs feeble warble had ceased; in the evening silence the slap of tiny waves on bow and stern made mellow music, accented at intervals by the dull splash of a fish surging from dusky depths to spring quivering into the starlight. Against the pale radiance of the heavens a mass of black foliage detached itself from the invisible shore; tiny lights gleamed in the north where Murden's store and the shanties stood, and a single yellow lantern hung from the flag-pole of the dark distillery. Shoreward, too, the thin chorus of the night insects came faintly to their ears when the wind set right; sometimes they heard the breeze rufie the lily-pads, sometimes a water fowl came whistling past to drop into the lake with a whirring spatter. Lanark, swearing in eloquent whispers, was still picking at the tangled flies as they drifted along a shore where the wild laurel and rhododendron swept the dark water with great clusters of pink and white bloom. A mink swam across the bows, leaving a shimmering fan-shaped trail in his wake,...

(Author Robert W. Chambers, born in Brooklyn, New York, wa...)
Author Robert W. Chambers, born in Brooklyn, New York, was a prolific novelist and short story writer in the genres of horror, fantasy, science fiction, romance, historical fiction, and art nouveau. He was listed by Hamilton W. Mabie (1911) as one of the must-read American authors. This particular work, “The Cambric Mask” (1899) is set in New York State. It follows an army officer turned “synthetic entomologist” as he starts to make a new life for himself in his chosen profession. It is a story of greed, blackmail, and the quest for big money, with some romance thrown in. Mr. Chambers’ wonderfully detailed description of the natural environment of the area brings you right into the story. Language note: the novel contains a few occurrences of terms that were in common usage at the time of writing but are no longer considered acceptable. This eBook edition was carefully prepared by referring to an original text to correct scanning errors that are common in other versions. Old spellings and word usages have been preserved, but obvious spelling and other typesetting mistakes in the original have been corrected. This edition was prepared and edited by Snazz eBooks™. Here is an excerpt: “Mr. Guernsey,” replied Sark; “I am not a shopkeeper. Profit and loss concern me little, speculation is equally unattractive. I came here to get away from people who buy and sell; I have no desire to increase my income, to invest any money, or to argue with you concerning my reasons or my private affairs. I speak plainly because neither you nor Mr. Creed have ever before shown me the slightest courtesy—no—not even the decent recognition of a neighbour. I came here alone, and you took pains to add to my inconveniences, because you feared a competitor. You practically closed Murden’s store to me, compelling me to pay heavily for transportation. “In return I have never molested you, even when your men cut fern on my land. I permit you to use my private road to the Water Tower; I never interfere with your cattle when you pasture them on my hills. But there is one thing I will not permit, and that is any invasion of my privacy. I am glad to have you as neighbours, I am glad to extend every courtesy in my power, I am very willing to remain friendly with you. But I must refuse to sell my land, and I trust you will not find, in my refusal, a reason for offence.” “Mr. Sark,” blurted out Guernsey, “I’ll give you half a million dollars for your land.” There was a silence; Murden, under the window, set his white teeth. “Are you mad?” said Sark’s cool voice. The King in Yellow and The Slayer of Souls - Includes the ‘Yellow Sign’ - Two Classic Novels in One Book. By Robert W. Chambers. Arkham Horror Reference Book Series. The Yellow Sign is a fictional symbol or glyph, first described in Robert W. Chambers' book of horror short stories The King in Yellow (1895). he King in Yellow never fully describes the shape and purpose of the Yellow Sign. Nonetheless, "The Repairer of Reputations", one of the stories in the collection, suggests that anyone who possesses, even by accident, a copy of the sign is susceptible to some form of insidious mind control, or possession, by the King in Yellow or one of his heirs. The stories also suggest that the original creator of the sign was not human and possibly came from a strange alternate dimension that contains an ominous and ancient city known as Carcosa. H. P. Lovecraft and many of his imitators were great admirers of Chambers' book and incorporated many of his characters and symbols into their own works. In the latter-day Cthulhu Mythos, developed by August Derleth and other Lovecraft imitators, the Yellow Sign is the sign of Hastur and is used by members of his cult to identify one another. In addition, according to many of these works one of Hastur's avatars is known as the King in Yellow. The King in Yellow THE YELLOW SIGN "Let the red dawn surmise What we shall do, When this blue starlight dies And all is through." I There are so many things which are impossible to explain! Why should certain chords in music make me think of the brown and golden tints of autumn foliage? Why should the Mass of Sainte Cécile bend my thoughts wandering among caverns whose walls blaze with ragged masses of virgin silver? What was it in the roar and turmoil of Broadway at six o'clock that flashed before my eyes the picture of a still Breton forest where sunlight filtered through spring foliage and Sylvia bent, half curiously, half tenderly, over a small green lizard, murmuring: "To think that this also is a little ward of God!"

"The bullet entered here," said Max Fortin, and he placed his middle finger over a smooth hole exactly in the center of the forehead. I sat down upon a mound of dry seaweed and unslung my fowling piece. The little chemist cautiously felt the edges of the shot-hole, first with his middle finger, and then with his thumb. "Let me see the skull again," said I. Max Fortin picked it up from the sod. "It's like all the others," he repeated, wiping his glasses on his handkerchief. "I thought you might care to see one of the skulls, so I brought this over from the gravel pit. The men from Bannalec are digging yet. They ought to stop." "How many skulls are there altogether?" I inquired. "They found thirty-eight skulls; there are thirty-nine noted in the list. They lie piled up in the gravel pit on the edge of Le Bihan's wheat field. The men are at work yet. Le Bihan is going to stop them." "Let's go over," said I; and I picked up my gun and started across the cliffs, Portin on one side, Môme on the other.

The first edition of The King In Yellow was published in 1895 by F. Tennyson Neely, and featured a picture of a lizard on the cover with a stylized symbol in the upper left corner. The symbol has mistakenly been cited as the Yellow Sign, but it is a monogram of F.T.N. - the publisher's initials. The same monogram and lizard appear on other early editions of books published by F. Tennyson Neely as part of their "Neely's Prismatic Library" series.

• Author’s biography is included • Active table of contents is included This eBook contains four books by American writer Rober W. Chambers: The King in Yellow, The Maker of Moons, The Mystery of Choice and The Tree of Heaven. ‘The King in Yellow’ is a book of short stories first published in 1895. E. F. Bleiler described it as one of the most important works of American supernatural fiction. There are ten stories, the first four of which, "The Repairer of Reputations", "The Mask", "In the Court of the Dragon" and "The Yellow Sign", mention The King in Yellow, a forbidden play that induces despair or madness in those who read it. ‘The Maker of Moons’ is a short story collection published in 1896, which followed the publication of Chambers most famous work, The King in Yellow. It contained eight new stories, including the title story "The Maker of Moons", one of his finest weird tales, and several romantic Art Nouveau stories, concluding with two less distinguished weird tales. The latter were subsequently incorporated into the episodic novel ‘In Search of the Unknown.’ ‘The Mystery of Choice’ is a short story collection published in 1897. Distinguished by an atmospheric use of natural scenery, the stories are mostly set in Breton in France. ‘The Tree of Heaven’ is a short story collection published in 1907. Mostly set in New York with a snowy nocturnal backdrop, the stories are light and humorous romantic tales, several of which feature the weird. TABLE OF CONTENTS ABOUT THE AUTHOR BOOK I. (AT ten minutes before five in the evening the office door...)
AT ten minutes before five in the evening the office doors of the Florida and Key West Railway Company flew open, and a young man emerged in a hurry. Suit-case in one hand, umbrella in the other, he sped along the corridor to the elevator-shaft, arriving in time to catch a glimpse of the lighted roof of the cage sliding into depths below. “Down!” he shouted; but the glimmering cage disappeared, descending until darkness enveloped it. Then the young man jammed his hat on his head, seized the suit-case and umbrella, and galloped down the steps. The spiral marble staircase echoed his clattering flight; scrub-women heard him coming and fled; he leaped a pail of water and a mop; several old gentlemen flattened themselves against the wall to give him room; and a blond young person with pencils in her hair lisped “Gee!” as he whizzed past and plunged through the storm-doors, which swung back, closing behind him with a hollow thwack. Outside in the darkness, gray with whirling snowflakes, he saw the wet lamps of cabs shining, and he darted along the line of hansoms and coupés in frantic search for his own. “Oh, there you are!” he panted, flinging his suit-case up to a snow-covered driver. “Do your best now; we’re late!” And he leaped into the dark coupé, slammed the door, and sank back on the cushions, turning up the collar of his heavy overcoat. There was a young lady in the farther corner of the cab, buried to her nose in a fur coat. At intervals she shivered and pressed a fluffy muff against her face. A glimmer from the sleet-smeared lamps fell across her knees. Down-town flew the cab, swaying around icy corners, bumping over car-tracks, lurching, rattling, jouncing, while its silent occupants, huddled in separate corners, brooded moodily at their respective windows. Snow blotted the glass, melting and running down; and over the watery panes yellow light from shop windows played fantastically, distorting vision. Presently the young man pulled out his watch, fumbled for a match-box, struck a light, and groaned as he read the time. At the sound of the match striking, the young lady turned her head. Then, as the bright flame illuminated the young man’s face, she sat bolt upright, dropping the muff to her lap with a cry of dismay. He looked up at her. The match burned his fingers; he dropped it and hurriedly lighted another; and the flickering radiance brightened upon the face of a girl whom he had never before laid eyes on. “Good heavens!” he said. “Where’s my sister?” The young lady was startled, but resolute. “You have made a dreadful mistake,” she said; “you are in the wrong cab—”

I was expecting my brother.”

"[...]gentleman's wealth and position. A gray squirrel came crawling and nosing through the fresh grass; he caught its eyes, and, though the little animal was plainly bound elsewhere on important business, the young man soon had it curled up on his knee, asleep. For a while he amused himself by using his curious power, alternately waking the squirrel and allowing it to bound off, tail twitching, and then calling it back, slowly but inexorably to climb his trousers and curl up on his knee and sleep an uncanny and deep sleep which might end only at the young man's pleasure. He, too, began to feel the subtle stillness of the drowsing woodland; musing there, caressing his short, crisp mustache, he watched the purple grackle walking about in iridescent solitude, the sun spots waning and glowing on the grass; he heard the soft, garrulous whimper of [...]".
