JOHNSTON, Harry Hamilton was born on June 12, 1858 in Keunington, London. Son of John Brookes Johnston and Esther Laetitia Hamilton.

Studied at Stockwell Grammar School. King’s College London. Student Royal Academy of Arts, 1876-1880.
Studied painting at Resident Advisor and also in France.
Doctor of Science Cambridge.
Career
Medallist South. Kensington School of Art, 1876. Silver medallist Zoological Society, 1896. travelled in North Africa, 1879-1880. Explored Portuguese West Africa and River Congo, 1882-1883.
Commanded Scientific Expedition of Royal Society to Mountain Kilimanjaro, 1884.
His (or Her) Majesty Vice-Consul in Cameroons, 1885. Acting Consul in Niger Coast Protectorate, 1887.
Consul for province of Mozambique, 1888. Expedition to Lakes Nyasa and Tanganyika (founding of the British Central Africa Protectorate), 1889.
