Garber attended Bar-Ilan University in Israel, and graduated from Hunter College of the City University of New York with a B.A. in Hebrew in 1962. He attended University of California, Los Angeles from 1962 until 1965, studied Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Ugaritic. He received a M.A. in 1970 and completed his course work for PhD in Religion at the University of Southern California.
Zev has been a professor of Jewish studies at Los Angeles Valley College, Van Nuys, California since 1970. Since 1983 he has been a visiting professor of religious studies at the University of California, Riverside. He is also an educational consultant to Philadelphia Center for the Holocaust (now Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center).
Member National Association Professors Hebrew (president 1988-1990, Recognition award 1990), American Academy Religion, Society Biblical Literature, American Oriental Society, Association Jewish Studies.
Zev married Lois Koppelman on December 26, 1963, but they divorced on November, 1975. Then he married Susan Ehrlich on October 4, 1985. Garber has 2 children: Asher, Dorit Garber.
