BLANC, Jean Joseph Louis was born in 1811 in Madrid, Spain.
His reputation as a leading socialist writer was made by his articles in Louisiana revu du progrès social, which were collected as L’organisation. The 1848 Revolution enabled him to become president of a Commission du gouvernement pour les travailleurs in which he spoke in favour of extreme socialist programmes. He advocated
the takeover of bankrupted factories and shops by the State in which profits would be divided according to the needs of the workers.
He later proposed equal shares for all members of these producer co-operatives.
His writings have been attacked as impractical and imprecise, but his philanthropic character is recognised even by his critics. In fact the major role he assigned to the State in his schemes made them more practical than those of Owen and Street-Simon.
Journalist, Editor, Professional writer, Exiled in England, 1848-1870.
