John Carpenter Carter moved to Memphis in 1860 to practice law.
He was commissioned in the Confederate Army as a captain in the 38th Tennessee Infantry and was distinguished for his performance during the battle of Shiloh in the spring of 1862. Carter also fought heroically in the battles of Perry Ville and Murfreesboro. He was appointed regimental commander during the battle of Chickamauga in the summer of 1863 and participated in the battle of Missionary Ridge before attaining the rank of brigadier general on July 7, 1864, during the Atlanta campaign.
At Jonesboro, Georgia, he served as a temporary division commander of Benjamin F. Cheatham’s Division. Carter's last assignment was under Hood in Tennessee, where he was mortally wounded while leading the assault on the federal works at Franklin.
