CHRISMAN, James Stone was born on September 14, 1818 in Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, United States, United States. Son of John and Sally (Stone) Chrisman.
He engaged in agricultural pursuits and studied law.
He obtained his education in the common schools, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1849. He practiced law in Wayne County until the outbreak of the Civil War. On December 10, 1845, he married Lucy Nelson Bell.
Chrisman, a secessionist Democrat, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1853 to 1855 but lost his attempt for reelection. He was a delegate to the Kentucky convention at Russellville in 1861, where he was made a member of the Executive Council. Chrisman also represented his state in both permanent Confederate Houses.
A supporter of the Davis administration, he served on the Elections, Indian Affairs, Territories and Public Lands, War Tax, and Medical Department Committees of the House. He also urged the Confederate invasion of Kentucky. During the last years of the war, he believed that an invasion of Kentucky would divide the Union army and deliver additional troops to the Confederate cause.
After the war, he returned to his law practice in Wayne County. He served in the lower house of the Kentucky legislature from 1869 to 1871, returned to his law practice from 1871 to 1873, and later was a delegate to the state constitutional convention of 1876. He continued his law practice until he died on July 29, 1881, in Monticello.
"Peculiar institution" of slavery was not only expedient but also ordained by God and upheld in Holy Scripture.
Stands for preserving slavery, states' rights, and political liberty for whites. Every individual state is sovereign, even to the point of secession.
After the war, he served as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives 1869-1871.
