Taught school, South Carolina., 1822-1824, 26-29. Admitted to bar; began law practice in Greensboro, 1832. Active local politics as Whig.
As North Carolina senator urged moderation on slave issue, 1846-1856. Member United States House of Representatives (Know-Nothing Party representative) from North Carolina, 35th-36th congresses, 1857-1861, opposed Le-Compton constitution in Kansas, one of strongest Southern Unionists, 1860-1861. Considered for appointment to Lincoln’s cabinet, 1861.
Became loyal supporter of Confederacy. Member 2d Confederate Congress, 1864-1865. Delegate National Union Convention, Philadelphia, 1866.
Member United States House of Representatives (Know-Nothing Party representative) from North Carolina, 35th-36th congresses, 1857-1861, opposed Le-Compton constitution in Kansas, one of strongest Southern Unionists, 1860-1861. Member 2d Confederate Congress, 1864-1865.
