Robert Ould attended Jefferson College in Pennsylvania and graduated from Columbian College in Washington in 1837. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1842.
Robert Ould practiced law in the District of Columbia from 1842 to 1861. In 1859, Ould was appointed by James Buchanan to succeed Key as United States Attorney for the District of Columbia.
He was a member of a committee to codify the District’s laws and was a district attorney for Washington before the war. Loyal to the South, he volunteered for government duties in the Confederacy after the Civil War began. From January to March 1862, he was the assistant secretary of war, appointed by President Davis.
In July 1862, he became the agent for the exchange of Confederate prisoners, where he paid careful attention to details and later had charge of the Confederate Secret Service. He was also judged advocate of the Confederate courts-martial during 1864-1865. After the war, he was indicted for treason on the charge of misappropriation of funds belonging to federal prisoners in the Confederacy.
Robert spent only eight weeks in prison and was cleared of all accusations, after which he practiced law in Richmond, Virginia.
After the war, Robert Ould became a member of the Virginia General Assembly.
Robert Ould was married twice. On December 2, 1846, he married Sarah Augusta Turpin. Their children were Martha Gwynn Ould Schoolcraft, Robert C. Ould, Samuel Riggs Gaither Ould, Sarah Turpin Ould Donaldson.
Madge Dorsey was his second wife. From this marriage, he had a daughter Madge Ould Powers.
