Bramwell studied at the University of Melbourne, completing a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws.
Founded in 1853 by an act of the Victorian Parliament, the University of Melbourne was the first university in Victoria and the second in Australia. Its teaching began in 1855, and a law school opened in 1857. Melbourne Law School initially offered LL.B degrees as a first law degree, a program it stopped in 2007 in favour of the J.D. The commerce school was one of several faculties established between 1904 and 1924.
Bramwell practised as a lawyer at Middletons Moore & Bevins in Melbourne. The firm traces its history back to the 1800s and was formed through the merger of three prominent firms. In 2001 its partnership divided, leaving a Melbourne firm that kept the Middletons Moore & Bevins name and a separate firm, Acuiti Legal. The Middletons name was later dropped when the firm combined with the global practice K&L Gates.
His documented practice areas were commercial law, commercial litigation, foreign investment, mergers, acquisitions and takeovers, mining, petroleum, and superannuation. The firm's Melbourne practice covered a wide range of fields, including banking and finance, insolvency, intellectual property, taxation, industrial relations, and resources and energy. He was admitted to the bar in Victoria in 1978.
