He was dubbed "the man on the coathanger" in his playing days because of his unusual gait. He kicked a few goals which was unusual for a forward, and his kicking style was ungainly if effective. Peter Brown was chairman of the Scottish Building Society from 1993–2003 and remains a non-executive director
Since 1975 he has been senior partner in Hogg Thorburn, chartered accountants, in Galashiels and is a non-executive director with Edinburgh Risk Management (General) Limited, insurance brokers.
