(These narratives cover four hundred years of the history ...)
These narratives cover four hundred years of the history of Scotland, and these are the years when the national character and the national fortunes took their definite bent and form. Their special value is that they supplement the ordinary histories precisely where these histories fall short, bringing before us with a vividness beyond the genius of any historian what essentially constitutes a national individuality. Even to the close of the 17th century Scotland was still a kind of terra incognita, which men though of as a half-mythical country, where strange things might exist which it was irrational to look for in any place nearer home. Till past the middle of the 16th century it was a common belief on the Continent that Scotland formed a distinct island, that it was considerably larger than England, and that it lay not north and south, but east and west, in the direction of Denmark and Norway. The publication of Mercator's Atlas in 1595 made men more generally acquainted with the earth on which they lived, and Scotland came to be better known as well as the rest of the world. Yet it sill remained a country regarding which travellers' tales were received with a foregone feeling of their intrinsic probability. The remoteness of Scotland and the nature of the country itself, doubtless in the first place gave rise to these stories; but the records of the travellers here collected prove that it was the Scottish and English chroniclers who gave them currency.
