Bunnell received his BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1959, his MFA from Ohio University, 1961 and an MA from Yale University, 1965.
He was the McAlpin Professor of the History of Photography &. Modem Art at Princeton University, where he has served in this capacity since 1972, as well as in his post as faculty curator of photography at The Art Museum there; previously (1973-78) he had served as The Art Museum's director. Prior positions have included curator of photography at The Museum of Modem Art (1966-72), staff assistant at George Eastman House (1958-65) and research associate at the Alfred Stieglitz Archive, Yale University (1961-66).
Mr. Bunnell was the recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1979. He was also director of the U.S. Exhibition, Venice Biennale, 1978.
Bunnell has been a member of SPE since 1964 and has served as its director since 1969, functioning also as secretary (1970-72) and chairman (1973-76). He belongs to the Friends of Photography, serving on its Board of Trustees since 1974 and as its president since 1979. From 1975 to 1979 he served on the Board of Directors of CAA.
