Cazalet joined the Royal Navy in 1917. During World War I he served as a midshipman in the battlecruiser HMS Princess Royal. From 1941 Peter served as commanding officer of the cruiser HMS Durban in the Eastern Fleet during World War II and saw action during the fall of Singapore. He continued his war service as Commander of the 23rd Destroyer Flotilla from 1944.
In 1946, Cazalet became a deputy director of plans at the Office of the Admiralty and Marine Affairs. Three years later he was appointed a commanding officer of the cruiser HMS London. The same year Peter held a position of a commodore at the Royal Naval Barracks Chatham. Then in 1950, he was a chief of staff to the flag officer in the Central Europe.
Also Peter served as an allied chief of staff to the commander-in-chief at the Mediterranean Fleet from 1953 to 1955. In 1955, he became a flag officer commanding the Reserve Fleet and had held the position until his retiriment in 1957. Cazalet worked as a chairman of Navy League from 1960 to 1967.
