Peter was born in Imola in c. 380.
In Imola bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Imola, baptized and educated Peter.
After the death of the Archbishop of Ravenna in 433, Peter accompanied to Rome a delegation seeking the confirmation of an elected successor. Pope St. Sixtus III, supposedly commanded by a vision of St. Peter and St. Apollinaris, the martyred first bishop of Ravenna, refused to ratify the election and named Peter to the post. As archbishop Peter enjoyed the favor of Emperor Valentinian III, and refused to support the condemned Monophysite Eutyches. Simple but instructive sermons merited for Peter the surname of Chrysologus ("of golden speech"), and later the title Doctor of the Church.
