Peter Eisner studied at Rutgers University, where he majored in literature with a minor in Spanish and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972.
Peter Eisner began his career as a reporter at Register-Star, Hudson, New York in 1974-75 and at Poughkeepsie Journal, Poughkeepsie, New York from 1975 to 1976. Two years later he worked as a newsman in New York for Associated Press (news service), till 1979. Peter traveled to Central and South America and worked as a correspondent in Brasilia, Brazil in 1979-81, bureau chief in Caracas, Venezuela in 1982, news editor for Mexico and Central America in Mexico City, Mexico from 1982 to 1983. One year later, he came back to the USA and served for Newsday, New York as a deputy foreign editor till 1985, senior foreign editor in 1985-89 and senior correspondent for five years.
In 1994, Peter Eisner founded NewsCom, an online international news and photo transmission agency, where he served as a managing director in 1994-98.
From 1999 to 2001, Eisner was the managing director of the Center for Public Integrity, a Washington-based watchdog organization. He served as deputy foreign editor and Washington, D.C, political editor with the Washington Post in 2003-2007.
Working for the Associated during the 1980s, Peter Eisner became familiar with the work of South American journalist Maria Jimena Duzán and served as the English editor and translator for her book “Death Beat: A Colombian Journalist's Life inside the Cocaine Wars” that was published in 1994.
Eisner interviewed former Panamanian leader General Miguel Noriega to write his next book in 1997 “America's Prisoner: The Memoirs of Manuel Noriega”. In Eisner’s 2004 book “The Freedom Line: The Brave Men and Women Who Rescued Allied Pilots from the Nazis during World War II” Eisner recounts the story of a mostly forgotten group of resistance fighters. Called the Comet Line, these fighters were made up of men and women from Spain, France, and Belgium. Their primary goal was to save Allied fliers who were shot down during missions in Nazi-occupied Europe.
Peter Eisner’s other books include “The Italian Letter” that was published in 2007, with co-author Knut Royce, which traces fraudulent U.S. intelligence prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, his 2013 book, “The Pope’s Last Crusade” with William Morrow, reveals the story of the lesser-known Pope Pius XI, who served before World War Two and engaged an American Jesuit journalist to help him oppose Hitler, Mussolini and anti-Semitism. .
Peter’s most recent books are “MacArthur's Spies” that was written in 2017, is a non-fiction account of guerrillas and the American underground in Japanese occupied Manila during World War Two. He wrote with Phillip Brenner “Cuba Libre: A 500-Year Quest for Independence” in 2017 and with Michael D'Antonio “The Shadow President: The Truth About Mike Pence” in 2018.

Peter is married to Musha Salinas on August 27, 1981. They have two children, Isabel and Marina.
