In 1890 Elfeldt was self-employed in Ostergade, Copenhagen, and later become photographer to the royal court. He served as president of the Association of Danish Photographers from 1906 to 1918 and was a member of the board of the Association of Trade Guilds of Copenhagen from 1918 to 1923.
He was the first to photograph public events in Denmark, and also photographed street life in Copenhagen and produced many stereographs.
