Forchhammer was born at Husum in Schleswig on the 23rd of October 1801, in the family of a well-known teacher, but because of his early death Peter was brought up by his relatives.
He received his secondary education at the school in Tönder and then in Lübeck's gymnasium, in 1821 he entered the Kiel University and later moved to Leipzig University. A short time he lived in Copenhagen with his brother, and after he defended his thesis for a Ph. D. in Kiel, he started private tutoring. In 1828 he defended his thesis for a master's degree, after which he began teaching at the University of Kiel.
In 1836 he was appointed extraordinary professor, in 1842 - an ordinary professor. He was one of the first teachers of archeology in Germany (along with Otto Jan). In 1830-1834 and 1838-1840 he conducted a variety of field studies in the Mediterranean region, relating to philology, archeology, mythology and geography. Later he founded the Archaeological Museum at Kiel University. Since 1874 he was a deputy from the University of Kiel in the House of Lords. His published works deal chiefly with topography and ancient mythology. His travels had convinced him that a full and comprehensive knowledge of classical antiquity could only be acquired by a thorough acquaintance with Greek and Roman monuments and works of art, and a detailed examination of the topographical and climatic conditions of the chief localities of the ancient world. These principles are illustrated in his Hellenika Griechenland Im Neuen das Alte (1837), which contains his theory of the origin and explanation of the Greek myths, which he never abandoned, in spite of the attacks to which it was subjected. According to him, the myths arose from definite local (especially atmospheric and aquatic) phenomena, and represented the annually recurring processes of nature as the acts of gods and heroes; thus, in Achill (1853), the Trojan War is the winter conflict of the elements in that district. He died on the 8th of January 1894.

Forchhammer was a democrat in the best sense of the word, and from 1871 to 1873 represented the progressive party of Schleswig-Holstein in the German Reichstag.
In 1868-1870 he was a member of the Prussian Landtag from the Progressive Party of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1871-1873 he was a member of the German Reichstag.
