Gansevoort, Peter was born in July 1749 in Albany, New York, United States. Son of Harmen and Magdalena (Douw) Gansevoort.
Education
Served with General Montgomery in expedition against Quebec, Canada, 1775. Commissioned major 2nd New York Regiment, 1775, lieutenant colonel, 1776, colonel 3d New York Regiment, 1776. Commander Fort George, defended Fort Stanwix against British and Indians under St. Leger for 20 days, 1777.
Commanded F.T. Schuyler, Rome, New York, 1777. In temporary command, Albany, 1777. With Sullivan in expedition against Indian allies of British, 1779.
In command, Saratoga, New York, 1780. Commissioned brigadier general New York Militia, 1781, major general 1793. Accompanied General.
