Peter James was born on August 22, 1948, in Brighton, East Sussex, United Kingdom. He is the son of Jack James and Cornelia Katz.
James was educated at Charterhouse School and attended Ravensbourne Film School.
James started his career, working as an assistant on the Brighton Evening Argus, and as a cleaning person at the home of Orson Welles. His first professional writing job was on Polka Dot Door, a daily TV show for pre-school children in Canada. He then turned to making films, and was involved mostly as a producer, financier and sometimes as a writer.
James' first novel, ‘Dead Letter Drop’ was published in 1981. From then until 2005 when he decided to concentrate totally on writing novels, he divided the time between an involvement in several businesses, including his family business, Cornelia James, and writing and developing film and television.
In 1997, together with producer and music writer James Simpson, James co-founded Ministry of Vision Ltd, a film and television development company and in 2001 they co-founded Movision Entertainment Limited where he was CEO until 2005.
Since 2005, James works as a freelance writer, living in Sussex. In 2017, James wrote the foreword for the U.K. edition of The Crime Book, with American crime author Cathy Scott writing the foreword for the U.S. edition.
Peter James is best known for writing crime and thriller novels and as the creator of the much-loved Detective Superintendent Roy Grace. With a total of 13 Sunday Times No. 1s under his belt, he has achieved global book sales of over 19 million copies to date and has been translated into 37 languages.
Synonymous with plot-twisting page-turners, Peter has garnered an army of loyal fans throughout his storytelling career – which also included stints writing for TV and producing films. He has won over 40 awards for his work, including the WHSmith Best Crime Author of All Time Award, Crime Writers’ Association Diamond Dagger and a BAFTA nomination for The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons for which he was an Executive Producer. Many of Peter’s novels have been adapted for film, TV and stage.

2005James is a patron of the Sussex Police Charitable Trust, patron of Brighton & Hove Samaritans, patron of the Brighton Greyhound Owners Association Retired Greyhound Trust, patron of Brighton and Hove Independent Mediation Service, patron of Relate in Sussex, patron of Terrys Cross House, patron of Little Green Pig, National co-patron of Neighbourhood Watch, co-patron of Sussex Crimestoppers, Honorary Patron for the South Mid Sussex Community First Responders and vice-president of The Old Police Cells Museum in Brighton. He also supports and works with The Reading Agency, a charity with a mission to give everyone an equal chance in life by helping people become confident and enthusiastic readers.
James is currently married to Lara James. The couple has no children. His first, 19-year marriage to Georgina ended in a divorce.
