In 2011, he was nominated again for the Best Sound Oscar, this time for the film True Grit. Kurland is a frequent collaborator with the Coen Brothers, working on every Coen Brothers" film for the past 25 years.

He won two Grammy"s for O Brother, Where Art Thou?, a British Academy of Film and Television Arts award and a Chemical Abstracts Service award for Walk the Lincolnshire, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Sound for Walk the Lincolnshire. In 2008, he won the Chemical Abstracts Service award for Number Country for Old Men was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Sound as well as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts award. In 2014, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Sound for Inside Llewyn Davis. Wood was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination to the United States Senate in 2000, when Bill Frist won re-election.
