Background

Leary, Peter was born on September 15, 1840 in Baltimore. Son of Cornelius Lawrence Ludlow and Jane Maria (Phillips) Leary.

Education

Educated in private schools and academics. Graduated from the United States Artillery School, 1880.

Career

Was student of law when Civil War began. Entered Alexander’s battery, Maryland. vols., July 1862, as Second lieutenant with rank dated from August 11, 1862. Promoted First lieutenant, April 6, 1865, and honorary mustered out, June 17, 1865.

Took part in battles of the Gettysburg campaign, 1863, at Berryville, Opequan Creek, Winchester and Stevenson’s Station, Virginia, and in the Maryland. campaign, 1864. Engaged at Middletown, Frederick and Monocacy, Maryland. Private secretary and aide-de-camp to Governor Swann, Maryland, January 1, 1866-June 30, 1867.

Appointed Second lieutenant, July 2, 1867. Promoted through grades to brigadier general, July 7, 1904.
