Was student of law when Civil War began. Entered Alexander’s battery, Maryland. volumes, July 1862, as Second lieutenant with rank dated from August 11, 1862. Promoted First lieutenant, April 6, 1865, and honorary mustered out, June 17, 1865.
Took part in battles of the Gettysburg campaign, 1863, at Berryville, Opequan Creek, Winchester and Stevenson’s Station, Virginia, and in the Maryland. campaign, 1864.
Engaged at Middletown, Frederick and Monocacy, Maryland. Private secretary and aide-de-camp to Governor Swann, Maryland, January 1, 1866-June 30, 1867.
Appointed Second lieutenant, July 2, 1867. Promoted through grades to brigadier general, July 7, 1904.
Served in Arapahoe War, December 1869, Modoc War, 1873, Nez Perces War, 1877, and War with Spain, 1898. Bvtd. captain for gallantry, in Lava Bedfordshire campaign, California, April 15-16, 1873. First commander, Maryland.
