Served in Royal Pembroke Artillery Militia, 1875 and 1876. Joined 67th Hampshire Regiment, 1878. Promoted Captain, 1884, Major, 1892.
Lieutenant-Colonel, 1903. Gazetted 2nd in command, 1897. Voluntarily retired, 1897.
Served in Afghan War, 1879-1880, with the 67th Regiment (medal). Served in Burma Expedition, 1885-1887, with the 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment, including the surrender of Mandalay (medal with clasp). Also with the 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment, 1887-1889, including the expedition to Mogaung (despatches, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, and clasp).
South Africa, 1899- 1900. Decorated for distinguished service when on “active service in the field.”. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1902; Honourable Captain and Adjutant 5th Australian Light Horse Regiment, New South Wales.
Spouse 1890,daughter of Thomas Chard, Ramsgate, and widow of Alex. Murray of Old Polmaise, Stirling.
