Martin began his career as a reporter of St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1951. Two years later he took a position of fellow at the Institute of Current World Affairs. Then in 1955, Peter was appointed a contributing editor of Time magazine. Also he served as a senior editor of the same magazine from 1962 to 1970.
In 1970, Martin became an assistant managing editor of Money magazine. Eight years later he held a position of an executive director of American Universities Field Staff, Inc. Since 1978 he has been an executive director of the Institute of Current World Affairs. In 1984, Peter took a position of an editor-in-chief of WorldWise newspaper, where he worked until 1995.
Martin is a member of Cosmos Club in Washington.
On January 3, 1953 Martin married Julia Gordon, with whom he divorced on July 6, 1976. They have two children. On January 1, 1980 he married Lucretia Lincoln.
