He was educated at Haileybury College and also at Upwey, Albury and Camberwell.
In 1960 he worked as a radio announcer in Ballarat, and after a stint overseas spent two years in Hobart. In 1964 he became a newsreader for the American Broadcasting Company, working in both television and radio. From 1970 to 1976 he was a councillor on Croydon City Council, serving as mayor from 1974 to 1975.
In 1976 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Ringwood, representing the Liberal Party.
Defeated in 1982, he returned to broadcasting with the American Broadcasting Company, working there until 2002. From 2005 to 2010 he was the president of Channel 31 Television in Melbourne.
