He received from New York University a B.A. in 1968 and an M.A. in 1970. Besides, he obtained a B.A. (with honors) from Queen’s College, Oxford in 1972.
Mertvago worked at the University of California, Berkeley as an instructor in Latin from 1972 to 1975. Then he worked for the United Nations, New York City as a translator and interpreter in English booth from 1976 to 1979. Thereafter he was an interpreter in Geneva, Switzerland from 1979 to 1995, and since 1995 he was senior interpreter in English booth. Mertvago worked for the University of Geneva as an instructor between 1986 and 1993.
He married Ludmila Zernovoy on January 7, 1976. The couple has 2 children: Vladimir and Nicholas.
