Gerhard Müller (1705-1783) is renowned as the first historian to specialise in the history and culture of Siberia. Born in Westphalia, Müller was invited to teach at the newly founded Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in 1725. He joined the Second Kamtchatka Expedition to western Siberia in 1735, and on his return spent the remainder of his life publishing works on the history of Siberia. His co-author Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811) also served on several expeditions to Siberia. This volume, first published in English in 1842, contains the English translation of these authors' detailed description of the Russian colonisation of Siberia and tensions with China. Combining ethnographic material with accounts of Russia's trade with indigenous Siberian peoples and China, this volume presented one of the first scholarly accounts of Siberia to western Europe at a time when the region was little known outside of Russia.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Peter Simon Pallas was born on September 22, 1741 in Berlin, Germany, the son of Simon Pallas, surgeon in the Prussian army and professor of surgery in Berlin.
Pallas received his formal education in Berlin. He was intended for the medical profession, and studied at the University of Halle and later at the University of Göttingen. In 1760 he received his doctor's degree from the University of Leiden. In 1761 he went to England to study natural-history collections and to make geological observations.
Pallas spent some time in Holland and England working in museums with rich collections in natural history. One of his early studies dealing with polyps and sponges was published in the Hague in 1761 and immediately attracted wide professional attention, not only because of the richness and originality of the presented empirical data, but also with its precisely stated general theoretical propositions. In 1764 he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Society. He then spent some time in Holland, and the results of his investigations appeared in the Hague in his Elenchus Zoophytorum and Miscellanea Zoologica (1766), and Spicilegia Zoologica (1767-1804, Berlin).
In 1768 he accepted the invitation of the empress Catharine II to fill the professorship of natural history in the Imperial Academy of Science, St. Petersburg. About the same time he joined a scientific expedition to Russia and Siberia, the immediate object of which was the observation of the transit of Venus in 1769. For the next six years he traveled across the length and breadth of the vast empire. He found a wide distribution of mammoth and rhinoceros fossils, including some with their hairy hides preserved, in the Siberian ice. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1774 with a great amount of data and many fossil specimens, but he had ruined his health. Between 1771 and 1778 he published his major findings from the expedition in three volumes under the title “Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des russischen Reichs” (Travels through Various Provinces in the Russian Empire). Written in German, the study was immediately translated into Russian, and then into French, Italian, and English.
Pallas guided several other exploratory expeditions to Southern Russia. As special results of his great journeys were ammlungen Historischer Nachrichten fiber die Mongolischen Volkerschaften (1776-1802), Novae species quadrupedum (1778-1779), Pallas's contributions to the dictionary of languages of the Russian empire (1786-1789), Icones insectorum, praesertim Rossiae Siberiaeque peculiarium (1781-1806), Zoographia rossoasiatica (1831), and many special papers in the Transactions of the academies of St Petersburg and Berlin. The empress bought Pallas's natural history collections for 20, 000 roubles, 5000 more than he asked for them, and allowed him to keep them for life. He spent a considerable time in 1793-1794 in visiting the southern provinces of Russia, and was so greatly attracted by the Crimea that he determined to take up his residence there. The empress gave him a large estate at Simpheropol and 10, 000 roubles to assist in equipping a house. Though disappointed with the Crimea as a place of residence, Pallas continued to live there, devoted to constant research, especially in botany.
