He resigned from the legislature, effective December 15, 2013, to become executive vice president and chief legal counsel for Winston-Salem-based Novant Health. He is a partner in the Corporate and Securities Practice group at Womble Carlyle.
Brunstetter served as chairman of the Forsyth County Board of Elections from 1990 to 1991, and was appointed to fill a vacancy in the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners in September 1991.
He served on the Board until 2004, after being elected to the position in 1992, 1996, and 2000. Brunstetter served as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners from 1994 until 2004, when he chose not to run for re-election.
In 2006, Brunstetter was appointed to fill a vacancy in the North Carolina Senate resulting from the death of Senator Ham Horton. Brunstetter is the former Chairman of Novant Health, Incorporated.
He is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Elon University School of Law.
He currently serves on the Board of Visitors of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 1977 until 1981, Brunstetter served as a commissioned officer in the United States. Navy aboard the United States Ship Briscoe, leaving with the rank of lieutenant. Brunstetter served in the Navy Reserves from 1981 until 1990, leaving with the rank of lieutenant commander.
Brunstetter received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Tulane University in 1977, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia in 1984 (Order of the Coif).

Brunstetter currently serves the Senate as co-Chairman of the Appropriations/Base Budget Committee, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary I Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Operations of the Senate, and as a member of the Finance, Commerce, and Redistricting Committees.
