Peter Stackpole was born on June 15, 1913, in San Francisco, California, United States.
Along with Alfred Eisenstaedt, Peter Stackpole was one of the first Life staff photographers, working for that magazine and Time Inc., from 1936 to 1960. He also wrote a column called "35mm Techniques" for U.S. Camera for fifteen years. Peter Stackpole covered the invasion of Saipan in 1945 as a war correspondent. He invented and built underwater equipment for still and movie photography between the years 1941 and 1974.
Working in various formats from 35mm to 4x5, Peter Stackpole was a pioneer in the development of U.S. photojournalism.
