( Theology, if it is to be a dynamic force in the world a...)
Theology, if it is to be a dynamic force in the world and not a lifeless relic, needs to be a continual process of reinterpretation, says Peter Hodgson. This sweeping reconstruction of theology in the postmodern period is a return to the process of continual theological revisioning through a systematic theology that has seemingly been abandoned by postmodern thinkers.

(An exciting theological contribution, New Birth of Freedo...)
An exciting theological contribution, New Birth of Freedom is an exercise in systematic theology with freedom as its central theme, universal in scope and application yet distinctively American in origin and point of view. Using the American experiences of freedom and oppression as starting points, the author seeks to develop an interpretation of the symbols of Christian faith as a whole. Professor Hodgson demonstrates his thesis in terms of the story of Christian faith - human bondage and liberation - which is also the story of God's worldly suffering and redemptive power. The author integrates data from the American experience, the literature of the liberation movements, and the analysis of existential and social phenomenology into a constructive theological statement. The book provides theological resources for interpreting the central dilemma of the American experience-the contradiction between the ideals of freedom and equality espoused by the Declaration of Independence and the realities of racial, class, sexual, as well as economic, political, and technological domination.

This is the first full-length study of Baur to appear in English. The author's concern is to show that for Baur historical theology was a discipline rooted in the perspective of faith and also a critical or "scientific" discipline, and that these two components come together in the historicals theologian's method. On the other hand, he suggests that Baur was concerned generally with the impact of critical-historical study on the shaping of Christian dogma or faith -that he was concerned with what we today call the problem of "faith and history ; and that he made distinctive contributions toward an understanding of this problem.
