Peter Herbert Bloom

Background

Peter Herbert Bloom was born on February 2, 1949, in Everett, Massachusetts, United States. He is the son of Herbert Kalish and Berenice T. Bloom.

Education

Peter became a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy at Boston University in 1972. Later next year he attended Longy School of Music in 1973 in the department of composition and theory. After six years Peter graduated and in 1981 he went to hone his skills at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio.

Career

Besides Bloom's career as musician and music educator, he also directs and performs with America’s Musicworks, an ensemble of musicians that presents the salon and ballroom music heard in the Americas throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as the director and performer. The ensemble continues the tradition of the Mendelssohn Quintet Club, America’s first professional chamber music group, which is considered by many to have been the finest small ensemble anywhere in the nineteenth century.

Achievements

• In recognition of Bloom’s notable work in the field of work, the American Musicological Society awarded him in 1990 the Noah Greenberg Award for “distinguished contribution to the study and performance of early music.”
