Kellner began his banking career at Bank of America in New York City in 1967. He progressed from trainee to vice president during his tenure there, serving until 1973 and gaining experience in commercial and investment banking operations.
In 1973, he joined Morgan Stanley as an associate and remained in that role until 1976. He was promoted to vice president in 1977 and served in that position through 1979. From 1980 to 1981, he worked as a principal at the firm. Beginning in 1982, he served as managing director of mergers and acquisitions at Morgan Stanley, specializing in corporate finance and advisory services related to mergers and acquisitions.
Served as Second lieutenant United States Army Reserve, 1967-1972.
