LUMSDEN, Peter Stark was born on November 9, 1829. Son of late Colonel T. Lumsden, Companion of the Bath, Belhelvie Lodge, Aberdeenshire.


Studied at Military College Addiscombe.


Entered Indian Army, 1847. Served in the Quartermaster-General ’s Department in frontier campaign in the North-west of India, 1851-1854. On special military mission to Afghanistan, 1857-1858.

In Central India campaign, 1857-1858. In China at capture of Taku Forts and occupation of Pekin, 1860. With Bhootan Field Force, 1865.

As Deputy Quartermaster-General, 1864-1868. As QuartermasterGen. of the Army, 1868-1873. Acting Resident, Hyderabad, 1873.

Adjutant-General of the Army, 1874-1879. Chief of the Staff' in India, 1879. Aide-de-camp to the Queen, 1870-1881.

British Commissioner for demarcation of North-west boundary of Afghanistan, 18S4-85. Member of the Council of India, 1883-1893. G. D.L. and Justice of the Peace for the Counties of Aberdeen and Banff.
