In 1769, Petr Borisovich observed the transit of Venus across the solar disk. In 1771-1774, he participated in the work of Academy of Sciences on connecting the Volga River and the Don River. In 1781-1785 he headed an astronomical expedition, which determined the geographical position of many cities in European Russia, including Voronezh, Orel, Kursk, Tambov.
In 1787 Petr Borisovich taught astronomy to naval officers and navigators, from 1793 he headed the Academic Gymnasium, in 1797-1799 was a censor in Riga.
Since 1799 in Academy of Sciences he was engaged in astronomical and meteorological observations. Together with other academicians translated works of Leonard Euler, Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon. Participant of Academy of Sciences in compiling a dictionary of the Russian language. Compiled descriptions of a number of governorates, the city Kargopol, the Caspian Sea and other geographic features.
