Background
Peter Popov was born on January 1, 1847, into a family of a simple Cossack and deacon in the village of Skuryshenskaya, the Province (Oblast) of the Don Cossack Host, roughly coinciding with today's Rostov Oblast of Russian Federation.

Petr Ivanovich Popov studied at the Ust-Medveditsk spiritual school. He graduated from the Voronezh Theological Seminary. But he did not follow the footsteps of his father and entered Russian Medical Military Academy in St. Petersburg.He was arrested at the 2nd course on February 13,1870 due to implication in the case of revolutionary Sergey Nechaev.
Petr Ivanovich was acquitted, among others, for the lack of evidence. However, he was deprived of the right to receive higher education in Russia. He went to the USA, where he graduated from the medical faculty of New York University. As a university student, he wrote articles to Russian magazines and newspapers about the culture, life, traditions of Americans and immigrants.
Petr Ivanovich Popov worked as a correspondent for the New York Times, Sun, Herald. In 1909 he lived in Paris, then again went to the United States. He was Director of the American insurance company "Equitebl". In 1924 he published memoirs about his life.
