Fine Arts School of Cluj
Petre Abrudan was born on July 8, 1907 in Zucor, Salaj, Romania.
Petre was formed as an artist during the interwar period following the classes of the Fine Arts School in Cluj, which he attended between 1926 - 1928 and 1931 - 1932. He studied with the professors Catul Bogdan, Alexandru Pop, Pericle Capidan, Aurel Ciupe, Anastase Demian.
The decisive factor for his becoming a painter was the time spent in Baia Mare, between 1933 and 1947, when he became one of the important figures of the local artistic life. It integrated with the painting school in Baia-Mare, feeling the influence of the Hungarian painter Ziffer Şándor. After a short period in Oradea, in 1950, he definitively settled in Cluj, occupying until 1974 a lecturing post at the Ion Andreescu Institute of Fine Arts.
Author of a complex and diverse creation, constantly evolving, Petre Abrudan placed the Transylvanian space at the center of his plastic creation. It often stopped on the traditional village, seen as an essential embodiment of intracarpic. By integrating folk themes, motifs and symbols, his work reflected a pronounced modernism. His inspirational sources included the Byzantine frescoes, from which he took on the characters' hieratic attitude. His landscaping gradually evolved from a post-impressionist conception to a simplified and essentialized plastic language. The artist died on May 18, 1979.
Petre Abrudan adhered to the artistic traditions of Impressionism and Expressionism.
