He has widely used applied mathematics to model mountain building, proving that they behave as extremely viscous fluids. England graduated with a degree in physics from the University of Bristol in 1972. He then moved to Oxford University to undertake research in geophysics, receiving his Doctor of Philosophy in 1976.
Since 2000, he has held the position of Professor of Geology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of University College, Oxford.
He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1999. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 2016.
