He was educated at Rugby School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in England, before studying for his Doctor of Philosophy at Columbia University in New York City. In 1921 he was appointed as a lecturer in economics at the University of Cambridge, and in 1929 he was made Professor of Commerce at the University of Birmingham, where he remained until his retirement in 1955.
