Kotler is the world’s foremost expert on strategic marketing, widely-acknowledged as the inventor of modern marketing. He serves as the S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Ethnicity: Kotler's parents lived in Ukraine and after the revolution, in 1917, they imigrated to the United States.

Kotler was born on May 27, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, United States; the son of Betty and Maurice Kotler.

Education

Kotler studied at DePaul University for two years and transferred to University of Chicago and was admitted into the Master`s Program. In 1953, he received his Master of Arts degree in economics from the same university. Then, in 1956, Philip graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree in economics and social science.

Career

Kotler has been the S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, since 1967.

He has been Chairman of the College of Marketing of the Institute of Management Sciences, a Director of the American Marketing Association, a Trustee of the Marketing Science Institute, a Director of the MAC Group, a former member of the Yankelovich Advisory Board and a member of the Copernicus Advisory Board.

Kotler has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and South America, advising and lecturing to many companies including: International Business Machines Corporation, Michelin, Bank of America, Merck, General Electric, Honeywell, and Motorola - in the areas of marketing strategy and planning, marketing organization, and international marketing.

Achievements

  • Kotler has authored over 52 books on all aspects of marketing, including the most widely used marketing textbook in graduate business schools worldwide, "Marketing Management". He has published more than 100 articles in leading journals, including the Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, the Journal of Marketing, Management Science and the Journal of Business Strategy.

    He was voted the first Leader in Marketing Thought by the American Marketing Association and named The Founder of Modern Marketing Management by the Handbook of Management Thinking.

    Kotler is also the founder of the World Marketing Summit and inducted in the Marketing Hall of Fame in New York City in 2014.
