Began as an office boy, London, England, 1904. Became a member of F. R. Benson’s Shakespearean Company, 1906. Joined Fred Terry and Julia Nielson’s Company, came to the United States in The Scarlet Pimpernel, 1910.
With Sir Herbert Tree at His Majesty’s, 3 years. Returned to the United States with Mistress Patrick Campbell in Pygmalion. Principal roles: Prince Albert in “The Swan,” Hannibal in “The Road to Rome,” Sirki in “Death Takes a Holiday,” Bothwell in “Mary of Scotland,” Washington in “Valley Forge”.
Played roles of Canio, Othello, Macbeth, Prospero, in Shakespearean productions. With Royal Flying Corps, World War.

Married Viva Birkett, July 23, 1912 (died in 1934).; married second, Gladys Cooper.
