In the event of an attack, they could, with the most perfect safety, retire within the casemates (which are as impervious to shot as the sides of Mount Orizaba) until the ammunition of the assailing force was ex pended, when they would return to their guns and sweep the waters with the most terrific efl'ect. General Scott, in his Autobiography, writes, The city of Vera Cruz, and its castle, San Juan de Ulloa, were both strongly garrisoned. The walls and forts of Vera Cruz, in 1847 were in good condition. Subsequent to its capture by the French under Admiral Baudin and Prince de Joinville, in 1838, the castle had been greatly extended, - almost rebuilt, and its armament about doubled. About the Book Titles about the history of Mexico show it was first populated more than 13,000 years ago, and was home to highly developed indigenous civilizations before being conquered and colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century. The Mesoamerican civilizations developed a form of writing, and Mexico's written history goes back hundreds of years before the Spanish. The Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan became the capital, Mexico City, under the Spanish. After a protracted struggle for independence (1810-1821), New Spain became the sovereign nation of Mexico. The brief period of monarchy, called the First Mexican Empire, was followed by the Republic of Mexico (1824). Porfirio Díaz was president of Mexico almost continuously between 1876 and 1911, and the Mexican Revolution occured during the chaotic period between 1910 and 1920. In World War II, Mexico was a strong ally of the United States, and supplied metals to build war materiel as well as farm workers, freeing up American men to fight in the war. Mexico came out of World War 2 with more wealth and greater political stability. Excerpt from The Home Squadron Under Commodore Conner: In the War With Mexico, Being a Synopsis of Its Services Containing Admiral Addendum Memoir, of the Landing of Our Army at Vera Cruz in Vera Cruz in 1847 Leaving out the blockade, which was maintained solely by the navy from the commencement of the war, the siege of Vera Cruz may be divided into three parts, - the descent, the bombardment, and the surrender. The entire movement was a combined military and naval operation, in which circumstances so favored the army as to yield to it the most active, brilliant, and best-appreciated share of the work. Nevertheless, the navy did perform most arduous and important ser vices. Among these was the descent, by which the army was placed under the walls of the enemy. Philip Syng was a renowned silversmith who created fine works in silver and sometimes gold for the wealthy families of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is famous for making the Syng inkstand in 1752, which was used during the ceremony of signing the United States Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution.

Philip Syng, Sr. trained all his three sons as silversmiths.
Career
About 1723 the father, who had trained three of his sons in his work, left his family and business and returned to Annapolis to live and work to the end of his life. At the time of his father's departure Syng took over the shop that had been established on Market Street and began to build for himself the reputation of being the finest craftsman of the family and one of the two finest that Philadelphia produced.
The most noted example of his silverwork is the inkstand which he made for the Assembly of Pennsylvania in 1752 at a cost of $25 166. This inkstand was used at the signing of the Declaration of Independence and of the Constitution, but its historical interest is not greater than its artistic merit. Besides the many pieces of Syng's plate that have come to light, there are a number of pieces of jewelry, simple in style but well designed.
It is probable that Syng's mark, as distinguished from that of his father, consisted of his initials in Roman capitals enclosed in a rectangle, with a leaf below, or before and after.
He was early a member of Benjamin Franklin's Junto, and when popular interest turned to the "electrical rod" he was one of the two or three serious experimenters with Franklin, who wrote in 1747 to Peter Collinson in London that Syng had invented a machine that aided in the generation of electricity.
He was also an early member of the American Philosophical Society, of which he was treasurer, 1769-71; one of the grantees of the charter for the Philadelphia Library Company, which was established in a room on Pewter Platter Alley; and one of the twenty-four trustees who met in Roberts' Coffee-shop in 1750 to organize the College and Academy of Philadelphia, which eventually became part of the University of Pennsylvania.
He was a warden of Philadelphia (1753) and for ten years its treasurer (1759 - 69), a member of the Provincial Commission of Appeals (1765), and a signer of the Non-importation Agreement (1765).
At his death Syng left a property of some size, including several houses and a country place called Prince of Wales Farm.

Philip Syng's chief achievement was in creation of the Syng inkstand in 1752, which was used to sign the United States Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution. Besides becoming one of the highly-sought Philadelphia silversmiths, Philip Syng, Jr. was a founder of the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Union Fire Company, Philadelphia Contributionship, Pennsylvania Hospital, and the American Philosophical Society.

In his religious affiliation Philip Syng was an Episcopalian, and from 1747 to 1749 he was a vestryman of Christ Church.
Membership
Syng was an early member of the American Philosophical Society since 1796. He was also an early a member of Benjamin Franklin's Junto, a club for mutual improvement established in 1727 by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia.
Syng was a Junior Warden of the first Masonic Lodge in America.
Connections
Philip Syng and his wife, Elizabeth Warner, whom he married on February 5, 1729/30, are said to have had twenty-one children, most of them girls, and only one son, Philip, who died in his twenty-seventh year, learned his father's art. One of his grandsons was Philip Syng Physick, the surgeon.
