Träger received a BA in 1956 from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, and a JD in 1960 from Columbia University School of Law, New York City. He is self-taught in photography.
In 1977 his book Photographs of Architecture was selected as one of the "Best Books of the Year" by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Association of the American University Presses, and The New York Times Annual Review of Books. Using 4x5 and 11x14 view cameras, the photographer mainly produces images of East Coast architecture. He also shoots landscapes and portraits.
