It was a suicide mission, code-named "Tidal Wave" - to fly from North Africa, across the Mediterranean, deep into Romania and destroy the heavily fortified Nazi oil refinery at Ploesti. The lives of the crews were in their pilots' hands as they began their low-level approach, running the gauntlet of tracers and cannon fire. This gripping firsthand account traces Ardery's career from early flight training to squadron commander, through the devastating losses in Romania to providing key air support for the massive D-Day invasion. Ardery graphically pictures the horror of war, his fears, his longing for his family and his grief for fallen comrades. You'll never forget this highly decorated author nor the missions he somehow survived.
