(Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary...)
Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering, and that was the fact that it is past and can't be restored." Well, over recent years, The British Library, working with Microsoft has embarked on an ambitious programme to digitise its collection of 19th century books. There are now 65,000 titles available (that's an incredible 25 million pages) of material ranging from works by famous names such as Dickens, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems , all of which can now be printed on demand and purchased right here on Amazon. Further information on The British Library and its digitisation programme can be found on The British Library website.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

He was born c. 1447
His father was a Flemish nobleman of high standing in the Burgundian army.
His formal education was limited, but his godfather, Philip V of Burgundy, reared him in his court.
The French chronicler Philippe de Comines wrote an extensive memoir of the reigns of Louis XI and Charles VIII
In 1464 Comines entered the service of Philip's son Charles the Bold, who became Duke of Burgundy in 1467.
The Memoirs of Comines, his only permanent contribution, covers the period from 1464 to 1498.
Recalled in 1492, he cooperated with Charles's Italian expedition, even representing the King at the Treaty of Vercelli.
He presented some theories that were influential in the 18th century.
Both he and his contemporary Niccolò Machiavelli shared the hardheaded view that success alone matters; but, unlike Comines, Machiavelli did not pervert Providence to consecrate reprehensible acts.
Left an orphan at an early age, he was raised in the court of Charles the Bold of Burgundy and gradually rose to a position of importance.
Comines' fortunes continued to rise.
Later he was released and banished to his own estates.
Within a few years he was restored to royal favor, however, and accompanied Charles VIII on his famous Italian expedition in 1494.
In 1507, he followed Louis XII to Italy. Comines devoted much time during his later years to the writing of his Mémoires, Memoires, a work which he dedicated to the archbishop of Vienne, Angelo Cato.
This work is divided into two main parts: the first, comprising six books, is concerned mainly with the reign of Louis XI; the second part, which includes books VII and VIII, relates to the reign of Charles VIII.
