Ervin was the Cape Cod League Most Valuable Player in 2012. The Cincinnati Reds selected Ervin in the first round, with the 27th overall selection, of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. The Reds signed Ervin to a contract with a $1,812,400 signing bonus.
He played for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie-level Pioneer League and the Dayton Dragons of the Class A Midwest League after signing, where he had a combined.311 batting average, nine home runs, 35 runs batted in, a.425 on-base percentage, and 14 stolen bases in 15 attempts.
