Scher, Phillip George was born on February 22, 1880 in Belleville, Illinois, United States. Son of Phillip Joseph and Catherine (Wagern) Scher.

Education

Educated St. Peter’s Cathedral School, Belleville, Illinois, 1887-1893, Pontifical College Josephenum, Columbus, Ohio, 1893-1896. Bachelor of Philosophy, University dir Propaganda Fide, Rome, 1896, Licentiate of Sacred Theology, 1902.

Career

Ordained priest Roman Catholic Church, 1903. Professor Josephenum College, 1903-1904. Assistant at St. Bibiana Cathedral, Los Angeles, 1904, successively pastor Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Santa Barbara, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Montecito, St. Bridget’s Church, Hanford, St. Francis Church, Bakersfield, St. Joseph’s Church, Capitola, 1905-1930.

Pastor Old Missions at Monterey and Carmel, 1930-1932. Vicar general and administrator of the Diocese, 1931-1933, bishop from 1933.
