He is a Democrat representing the 19th district, encompassing western San Francisco and northern San Mateo County. Prior to being elected to the state assembly, he was the Assessor-Recorder of San Francisco. Philosophy Ting was appointed San Francisco Assessor-Recorder in 2005 by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom, becoming San Francisco’s highest-ranking Chinese-American official at the time.
He began his career as a real estate financial adviser at Arthur Andersen and Central Bank Richard Ellis.
Ting had also served as the executive director of the Asian Law Caucus, as the president of the Bay Area Assessors Association, and on the board of Equality California. Ting has launched several programs and initiatives such as GoSolarSF and ChinaSF. In 2010, he launched Reset San Francisco, an online community that using new media to engage San Franciscans to get engage and participate in the conversation on how to improve their community and to keep government more accountable.
In February 2012, Ting commissioned the nation’s first real study of mortgage fraud that has spurred national action to protect homeowners from wrongful foreclosure.
