In 1941, at the age of 15, Pierre Eugene Bérégovoy left school to work as a machinist. He later worked for the national railways and joined the French Resistance.
In 1958 Pierre Eugene Beregovoy was a founder member of Independent Socialist Party. From 1979 to 1981 he was a member of Economic and Social Council. From 1963 to 1967 he was a member of the Unified Socialist Party Secretariat. In 1967 he became a founder of Modern Socialism Club. In 1969 he served as a member of management committee and executive office of Socialist Party. From 1973 to 1975 he worked as the National Secretary for Social Issues.
From 1975 to 1981 he worked as the National Secretary for External Relations. He was a Socialist Party representative to Left Liaison Committee. From 1981 to 1982 he herved as a secretary-general at the Office of President of the Republic.
From 1982 to 1984 he was a minister for Social Affairs and National Solidarity. From 1984 to 1986 he was a minister for Economy, Finance and the Budget. In 1986 he became a deputy for Nièvre, 1st constituency, and was reelected in 1988, gave up seat to Marcel Charmant. Since 1988 he had been a Minister of State for Economy, Finance and the Budget.
He was a Prime Minister of France under President François Mitterrand from April 2, 1992 to March 29, 1993.
In 1948 Pierre Eugene Bérégovoy married Gilberte Bonnet. They had three children: Catherine, Lise, Pierre.
