In much of his work, particularly in his monumental Savoirs et idéologie (1980), Fougeyrollas has been concerned to offer a Marxist critique of the history of sociological and anthropological thought, from its first stirrings in the precursors of the Enlightenment to more recent developments such as the structural anthropology of Claude Lévi-Strauss, the idealist métapsychanalyse of Jacques Lacan and the panlinguistique idealism of Michel Foucault. Throughout, he has attempted to disentangle knowledge from ideology in the human sciences, an entanglement that he sees as having prevented a breakthrough to the true, scientific understanding of social and human processes which he associates with Marxism. 1° his estimation Marxist dialectical materialism is a science and not a philosophy.
In connection with this critique, as its fulfil" ment in practice, Fougeyrollas has proposed a radical. Trotskyite political view or pensée-actionIn this, he would resume the movement of the 'révolution mondiale' begun in 1917 with the
Russian Revolution and interrupted and largely perverted after 1923 as a result of the general degeneracy of bureaucratic states pretending to be socialist, and of Communist parties and their theoreticians who allowed themselves to be covert accomplices of capitalism. The sociopolitical programme of Fougeyrollas, a collective liberation conceived as extending to all aspects of human existence, from technical and scientific rationality to our relations with nature, with one another and ourselves, has been criticized as unrealistic. But his Marxist critique of the social sciences is widely regarded as one of the most searching of its kind. Through his many writings Fougeyrollas has established himself as a leading critic of contemporary thought and society.
