( Europe's expansion into the New World during the 16th, ...)
Europe's expansion into the New World during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries was a story of power alignment and cultural transmission as well as dramatic individual effort. Spain had her conquistadores, France her coureurs de bois, and England her sea dogs. Isolated from the authority of home governments, tempted by the abundance of gold, fur, and fish in the New World, these adventurers so vital to national policies of expansion developed their own personal creeds of conquest and colonization. Their individual exploits not only represent a humanistic theme essential in Europe's movement westward but heighten the analyses of cultural institutions of the era. It is within such a multidisciplinary light that one can experience the Gulf Coast adventures of Pierre LeMoyne d'Iberville.

Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville was born on July 16, 1661, in the frontier village of Montreal, the third son of Catherine Thierry and Charles Le Moyne.
At the age of fourteen Pierre Le Moyne entered the French royal navy, in which for ten years he rendered distinguished service in the cause of French efforts to achieve colonial supremacy on the North American continent.
In 1685 after the death of his father he, with two of his brothers, joined the expedition of the Chevalier de Troyes, which left Montreal early in 1686 and followed the Ottawa and the Moose rivers to the James Bay posts of the Hudson's Bay Company, and there destroyed three of the English forts. In similar attempts to expel the British, Iberville again raided the company's fur-trading posts in 1687, 1689, 1691, 1694, and 1697. In the last of these raids Iberville, with one small ship, sank one British warship and captured two, but later lost his own ship in a storm and saved his men from starvation only by capturing the British post of Fort Nelson. He was also one of the leaders in the expedition that sacked and burned Schenectady in 1690, and in 1696 he captured both Fort Pemaquid on the Maine coast and the British fort St. John's, in Newfoundland. His daring exploits, however, and the hardships which he endured did not lead to French control of the Hudson Bay area, and with the signing of the Peace of Ryswick in 1697, terminating the eight-year war between France and England, Iberville's stirring role in this struggle was also ended. The following year he was commissioned by the French government to found a colony in Louisiana at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Sailing from Brest, France, in 1698 with four ships, he reached the Mississippi in March 1699 and ascended it as far as the mouth of the Red River. Finding no suitable site for a colony, he returned to the mouth of the Mississippi and near it built Fort Maurepas (now Biloxi, Miss. ), thus establishing the first permanent French settlement on the Gulf Coast and succeeding where Sieur de la Salle had failed thirteen years earlier. Iberville returned the following year and established a second colony near the present site of New Orleans, and then explored the Red River country. In 1702 he made his last expedition to French Louisiana and founded a third settlement at Mobile Bay. The war between France and England having broken out anew, he then left his colonies and as commander of the West Indian fleet captured the islands of Nevis and St. Christopher from the British in 1706. While refitting his ships for an expedition against the Carolinas, Iberville died on July 9, 1706.
